Robert HenreichDemocrats came to a new proposal on Wednesday which would allow offshore drilling 50 miles from the coast if the state approves: federal waters within 50 miles of shore would continue to be protected. Waters off Florida’s Gulf coast also would remain protected at least until 2022 under the plan.
Collectively a group of scientists, environmental groups, and former members of Australia’s navy have urged for the creation of a gigantic reserve that would ban fishing in a pristine 400,000 square mile area known as the Coral Sea– if approved, it will be the world’s largest protected marine area.

According to three reports delivered to Congress today, a $5.3 million investigation uncovered “a culture of ethical failure” amongst the Interior Department. The department’s inspector general - Earl E. Devaney - found that over a dozen current and former employees had engaged in such transgressions.
